Export-Import Entry

Import Export Code (IEC)

Taking your products or services to the international market is a major step toward business expansion. While international trade can seem daunting due to complex legal procedures, the Importer Exporter Code (IEC) is the first and most vital requirement for any business in India.

The IEC is a unique 10-digit code issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT). It is mandatory for anyone looking to import or export goods. For services and technology, it is required in specific circumstances where trade involves restricted or high-security sectors.

When is an IEC NOT Required?

There are certain exemptions where a business or individual does not need an IEC registration:

Personal use items (non-commercial)
Government Ministries & Departments
Notified Charitable Organizations
Small non-trade goods (Agriculture/Home)

Applicability for Services

If you are dealing in "Specified Services" or "Specified Technologies" that pertain to national security (e.g., restricted tech, weapons, nuclear-related items), obtaining an IEC is mandatory even for service-based operations.

The Application Process

The procedure for obtaining an IEC has been simplified and moved entirely online:

  • Digital Submission: Applications must be submitted through the authorized DGFT portal.
  • PAN-Based: The IEC is linked directly to your business PAN card.
  • Lifetime Validity: Once issued, the IEC is valid for the lifetime of the entity, requiring only a simple annual update.
✓ PAN Card: Individual or Company PAN.
✓ Identity Proof: [Aadhaar Redacted], Voter ID, or Passport.
✓ Bank Certificate: Cancelled cheque or bank certificate.
✓ Address Proof: Utility bill or Rent Agreement of the business.
✓ Digital Signature: Required for secure portal authentication.
