Copyright is a legal right granted to the creator of original literary, dramatic, musical, artistic works, cinematographic films, sound recordings, and computer programs. It protects the expression of ideas rather than the ideas themselves.
In India, copyright is governed by the Copyright Act, 1957 (amended in 1983, 1984, 1992, 1994, and 1999). The term of protection for most literary works is the author’s lifetime plus 60 years.
Any reproduction, distribution, public performance, adaptation, or translation of the copyrighted work without the owner’s permission constitutes infringement.
Note: Fair use for teaching, research, and criticism is permitted under the law.
Copyright Registration provides legal protection and stronger enforcement rights to creators. It helps prevent unauthorized use and gives the owner exclusive rights to exploit their creative work commercially.
Eligibility: Any creator or owner of original work can apply for copyright registration.
